Business Networking Events- Elusive Results Part 1 of 8

Got an upcoming business networking event? What crosses your mind? Are you excited? Do you immediately check to see if you are available?

Remember the guy who cornered you last time? What was he was talking about anyway? Can’t quite remember can you. He was probably trying to avoid doing something else. What was it he was trying to avoid anyway? Ugh!!

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t quite that bad. But seriously, when you think back on each of these events, what comes to mind?

Pull up your contact list in your phone. Call out the names of people you keep in touch with on a semi-regular basis that you met at a business networking event. Some lists might be long, but I presume most will not. Why is that? Got a clue?

Long-term positive results from attending business networking events are elusive at best- for most people. But it does not have to be this way.

The next time you attend a business networking event go with a new mindset. Approach it in a new way. Try one or more of the following ideas.

Take 5 business cards- no more than 5
Forget your elevator pitch- mentally block it out
Memorize your name- seriously!
Prepare 2 to 3 discovery questions- use these to ‘listen’
Plan on only speaking to 5 people- hold meaningful conversations
Excuse yourself from shallow conversations- they are wasting your time

Okay. Think on these for a while- maybe even a day or two. In the next 6 blog postings, I will address 1 idea each. When you read the ideas listed above, do you instantly disagree? If so, why? Or do you think you have an idea where I am going with this?
